The rhythmic strokes of the therapist combined with the medicinal qualities of the herbs in the oil help greatly to relieve joint pain and muscle stiffness, increase blood circulation, speed up the removal of metabolic waste and calm Vata related problems. Abhyanga has also shown to help with anxiety, fatigue, circulatory disorders, arthritic problems, backaches and many types of injuries.
Even if you do not struggle with any of these problems – Abhyanga is always a great experience. It leaves you refreshed with a feeling of increased inner balance and enhanced mobility.
Shirodhara
Shirodhara is a treatment method in which a liquid is poured across the forehead in a rhythmic manner. The name comes from the Sanskrit words shiro (head) and dhara (flow). The choice of liquid for Shirodhara depends very much on the desired effect and it ranges from medicated oils, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water.
Shirodhara deeply relaxes the nervous system, supports brain functions, increases blood circulation to the brain, improves memory, nourishes the hair, scalp and sense organs, beautifully calms body & mind and encourages sound, restful sleep.
Swedana
Swedana literally translates to perspire. The main purpose of Swedana is to increase body temperature and to open the system of channels (srotas and nadis) in the body. This gets toxins to move from shakha to koshta or from the tissue level to the digestive tract, from where they can be lead out of the body through one of the cleansing actions that are part of Pancha Karma procedures.
Swedana is useful for all conditions related to stagnation, coldness and stiffness. Sweating also reduces fat tissue and thus assists in weight loss.
Pizhychil
Pizhychil means squeezing or pouring. In this type of treatment, warm and medicated oil is continuously poured from pitchers onto the body. In olden times, people used cotton cloths to do this – thus the use of the word “squeezing”.
Pizhychil gives great benefits in rheumatic diseases, arthritis and all nervous disorders like paralysis, hemiplegia, Parkinson’s disease. The treatment relieves body pain and muscle spasms, speeds up the healing of fractured bones and other injuries, increases immunity, improves skin complexion, has anti-aging properties and is soothing, relaxing and rejuvenating.
Navarakizhi
Navara is a type of rice known in India for its great medicinal value. Kizhi means bundle or poultice. Navarakizhi involves the fomentation of the body with a bundle of cooked rice. To prepare this treatment, the rice is first boiled in a herbal milk decoction and then packed up in a cotton cloth. The bundle then gets heated in milk before application.
This specific treatment is great for strengthening, rejuvenating and nourishing the body (tissues) and skin, improving muscle tone and blood supply and increasing immunity. It is also very effectively assisting in curing diseases of the nervous system as well as chronic rheumatism, osteoarthritis and gout.
Kati Basti
Kati Basti is one treatment from a group of treatments called external oleation therapies (Snehana). In this particular treatment, medicinal oil is first heated and then held in place at a specific area of the patient’s back by a ring made out of dough. The static placement of the medicinal oil allows for full absorbtion of the medicinal qualities in the oil and a deep nourishment of the underlying tissues.
The treatment is often used to treat anatomical problems of the lumbar/sacral region, including slipped disc, sciatica or other spinal related problems.
Takradhara
Takradhara is a traditional Ayurvedic Treatment procedure wherein buttermilk is continuously poured onto a specific body part, often the forehead – in which case it is a variety of Shirodhara. Due to its cooling qualities, buttermilk is used for heat related problems.
Takradhara can be very effective in treating psoriasis, hypertension and lack of sleep.
Ubtan (Udvarthanam)
Udvarthanam is a massage with herbal powders. Various herbal powders are mixed with oil, milk or medicated liquids and rubbed onto the skin upwards towards the head.
Ubtan improves blood circulation, reduces bodyweight and is also used in various skin diseases. Further to this, it helps curing hemiplegia and paralysis.
Lasika Shodana (Manual Lymphatic Drainage)
Lasika Shodana is an important treatment designed to assist the workings of the Lymphatic system which plays an important role in our immunity. If the Lymphatic system is not working properly, it can cause a build-up of fluid in the tissues as well as more serious medical problems like lymphagitis and lymphoma.
The gentle and rhythmic strokes that are part of this treatment, increase the process of lymph drainage through the body, thus promoting immune support, detoxification, regeneration and nourishment of cells and tissues.
